Rival fans claim something suspicious about Liverpool’s Covid outbreak

Rival fans have joked that Liverpool's Covid crisis suspiciously times up with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Naby Keita leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Liverpool's Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal on Thursday evening has been postponed.

The Reds have confirmed "multiple" new suspected cases have been recorded in addition to those from Monday and Tuesday.

And Liverpool's training ground has now been shut for at least 48 hours as the number of positive cases continues to rise.

But the news of more positive cases has led rival fans to joke the Reds are looking to minimise the impact that the absence of their African players will have.

One fan joked: "Who predicted a Liverpool covid outbreak around the same time as Salah and Mane left for the AFCON?"

"With Salah, Mane and Keita about to leave for the Afcon! Play the Covid card," a second tweeted.

A third tweeted: "Liverpool say there is a COVID-19 outbreak within the club just when Salah, Mane and Keita left for AFCON and they face Arsenal at the Emirates. How convenient."

"I’m surprised Liverpool haven’t asked for AFCON to be postponed," a third added.

Liverpool have only confirmed three players have tested positive for Covid: Alisson, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino.

However, three more staff members, as well as Pep Lijnders, will join Jurgen Klopp in self-isolation after testing positive.

Liverpool released a statement: "Pepijn Lijnders has returned a suspected positive test for COVID-19, further impacting the club's preparations for Thursday's Carabao Cup tie with Arsenal.
