Savvy punter wins big sum from 2016 bet after Harry Kane breaks goal record

One England fan was extra pleased Harry Kane broke the all-time goalscoring record – as it won him £1,340.

The savvy punter had backed Kane to achieve the feat all the way back in 2016. Reece Kerridge-McColl, from Portsmouth, put £20 on the bet at odds of 66/1.

Taking to social media after Kane scored his 54th Three Lions strike to overtake Wayne Rooney at the top of the charts, he tweeted: "Cheers @HKane been a long time coming." Sky Bet, who he'd placed the bet with, replied: "All good things come to those who wait."

The successful longshot was hailed by fellow footy fans online. One wrote: "That was a great bet."

Another commented: "Placed seven years ago like, fair f***s." A third echoed: "Who puts a £20 bet on for seven years in the future hahaha fair play."

"This is a long a** bet but at least it came in," said a fourth, while a fifth argued: "20 quid well invested."

"What a bet fair play," praised a sixth. And a seventh joked: "Ffs give him the extra inflation."

Reece had already eyed up his next punt as he tweeted: "You guys offering odds on [Jude] Bellingham becoming England's most capped outfield player?"

Unfortunately he was met with a response of: "Sorry, that's not something we'd be looking to offer."

Kane, meanwhile, was over the moon to have written his name into England folklore. "It means everything," the 29-year-old said.

"I was so excited to put the England shirt on and get back out here and get the campaign started for next year's Euros. It had to be a penalty and once it hit the back of the net, huge emotion. A magical moment."
