Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed he be ‘delighted’ if Sergio Aguero joined Chelsea in the summer transfer window. Aguero is set to move on a free transfer this summer, and Guardiola said he would have no problem with the striker switching to Thomas Tuchel’s side – even though the move would strengthen a Premier League rival.

Chelsea look set to strengthen their front line this summer, and are expected to rival City for the signature of Erling Haaland.

They are also believed to be interested in signing Aguero – and could target both strikers as manager Tuchel looks to turn his side into genuine title challengers.

Aguero has also been linked with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid – but could opt to stay in the Premier League and improve on his standing as the fourth highest scorer in the competition’s history.

And Guardiola has said he would happy for City’s all-time leading scorer to join a domestic rival – even though it would mean lining up against the 32-year-old next season.

TRANSFER LATEST: Chelsea boss Tuchel’s comments leave Tammy Abraham’s future bleak

“The best for him, we wish, all of us,” Guardiola said ahead of City’s clash against Leeds United – who have also been linked with a move for the striker.

“Find the best for Sergio for the last years in his career, for sure. We’ll be delighted with the decision he takes, the best for him and his family and his career.

“My preference is his preference. His preference is my preference. The best for him is the best for us.”

Aguero has scored just three goals for City this season, with his campaign having been disrupted by injury and a spell out with coronavirus.

The striker was replaced midway through the second half of last weekend’s win over Leicester, after what was only his fifth Premier League start this season.

Guardiola hopes the Argentine ace can get back to his best before the end of the season with City still targeting success on four fronts this campaign.

“Everyone must be ready and hopefully Sergio can be ready quick,” Guardiola said.

“Sergio is a lovely person with specific qualities and skills. I understand him, I know him, and I understand he needs time to get in the best condition.

“I said last week. After we announced [his departure] the way he trained, and in the Leicester game, which was so difficult because they defend so deep and so tight, for the strikers it is not easy, he moved well and helped us.

“He felt something in his leg [and] he was substituted. He is doing better.”

Aguero has scored 257 goals in 385 games for City – including his famous last-ditch winner which secured the Premier League title from under the noses of rivals Manchester United in 2012.

He is fourth on the all-time Premier League top scorers’ list on 181, and could catch second-placed Wayne Rooney on 208 – although leader Alan Shearer is still way ahead on 260.

Chelsea’s top scorers in the league this season are Tammy Abraham and Jorginho on just six each, with all of the latter’s goals having come from the penalty spot.

Strikers Olivier Giroud, Timo Werner and Abraham have combined for just 15 Premier League goals, four less than Golden Boot leader, Tottenham’s Harry Kane, has managed on his own.

And according to 90min, Chelsea are open to the idea of bringing in both Haaland and Aguero this summer.
