Solskjaer’s take on Aston Villa’s 7-2 win not what Liverpool fans want to hear

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned Liverpool that nobody will ever forget their 7-2 mauling by Aston Villa.

The Reds’ stunning drubbing back on October 4 shocked the world of football.

Jurgen Klopp’s reigning champions were destroyed by Dean Smith’s side, who had only avoided relegation three months prior by the skin of their teeth.

Villa’s transformation in 2020 has been remarkable, with the team now sat fifth in the table.

They are seven points behind leaders Liverpool going into the New Year, but have played two games less.

United know they face a seriously tricky test against Jack Grealish and Co at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day (8pm).

Solskjaer’s men have already suffered a thrashing of their own this season when Jose Mourinho came back to haunt United as Tottenham beat them 6-1 at The Theatre of Dreams – incredibly the same day as Villa’s historic triumph over Liverpool.

Reds supporters will hope to never speak of the game at Villa Park again, but ahead of United’s showdown with Smith’s side, he has said that the 7-2 thriller is one everyone will remember from this season.

United can learn much from that match, as Solskjaer assessed his team’s opponents, saying: “They (Villa) have been brilliant.

“I have to say Dean Smith has done a fantastic job.

“We played them pre-season and they beat us then in the one game we had before the league. We know all about how tough this is going to be.

"They’ve got individual players that are physically strong, defensively they have been one of the better teams in the league, and when you beat Liverpool 7-2 it’s not just defending.

“It’s counter-attack and quality players. That is maybe the game everyone will remember from this season."

United will have to watch out for striker Ollie Watkins, who bagged a first-half hat-trick against Klopp’s Liverpool.

Long-term Red Devils transfer target Grealish was also on top form against the Reds that day, netting twice.

On his last visit to Old Trafford too, the England playmaker curled home a worldie from a tight angle in a 2-2 draw between Villa and United way back on December 1, 2019.
