Souness claims Arsenal have as few as two players good enough to win trophies

Graeme Souness claimed only a handful of Arsenal players have the quality required to win major honours in a withering assessment of the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta's side sit 15th in the Premier League after a dire start to the season and a six-game winless run in the top flight.

There were some signs of improvement in their last game – the 1-1 draw with Southampton – but Arsenal were second best for much of the Emirates clash.

The dismal start to the campaign has raised serious questions about Arteta's credentials – but Souness insists the problem lies with the players rather than the management team.

"They've not got enough good players," said Souness" It doesn't matter what manager they've got in there.

"You have to look beyond the manager and look at the people who are making the signings.

"The amount of signings and the quality of signings. Unless you've got the equipment to work with he ain't going to do well in our league.

"You've got to invest, have some of the best players around if you're Arsenal. Size of the club, in London, the funds they have at their disposal I would like to think.

"But they're just not good enough. You can go through their team as I did last week.

"If you're looking to win things you've got maybe two or three, four maximum players that are good enough to do that. And that's the top and bottom of it."

The Gunners' last win in the Premier League came on 1 November, when they battled to a 1-0 win away at Manchester United, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting the winner from the penalty spot.

Since then, they have been beaten by Aston Villa, Wolves, Tottenham and Burnley, and drawn with Leeds and Southampton.
