Jamie Carragher is backing Erik ten Hag over the civil war with Jadon Sancho at Manchester United. The Liverpool legend does not think the Red Devils boss can afford to lose the “fight” with the excluded star.
Sancho is still being left out in the cold by Ten Hag. The winger hasn’t trained with his team-mates since he was dropped for the trip to Arsenal earlier this month.
Ten Hag claimed at the time he left Sancho out because of his poor levels in training. Sancho hit back on social media in a now-deleted post where he stated “I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair”.
United won’t welcome Sancho back into the fold until he apologises to Ten Hag. Carragher is firmly in the camp that managers should have the power that Ten Hag has shown in recent weeks.

He thinks the Dutchman must stick to his guns and not give in before Sancho does what the club have asked of him. Carragher, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast brought to you by Sky Bet, said: “I’m with the manager on this one. Normally in these situations we don’t know anything that’s gone on behind the scenes, but I’m normally with the manager.
“You think of ten Hag and where he’s got to get to, and we rave about Jurgen Klopp in these situations, or Pep Guardiola only a few months ago with Cancelo, who was a great player for them, but he was gone – sold. They deal with those situations, and we say they are strong managers and very ruthless.
“Ten Hag almost can’t afford to lose this fight. He’s come out and I don’t think it’s massive what he said in the press conference after the game. He’s been asked a question why Sancho isn’t in the squad, and the answer is he hasn’t trained right.

Sheikh Jassim ‘stance’ on making new Man Utd bid as Jim Ratcliffe plans emerge[LATEST]
“Because Erik ten Tag is going through a really difficult spell – Man United haven’t started the season well – we say ‘he’s losing the dressing room’ but if he was winning, we’d be saying ‘he’s ruthless, he’s dealt with the situation and sent a message to the dressing room’. I’m always with the manager on this.
“It’s not even heavy criticism – has he been training right? He’s been awful – he’s been really poor considering how much he cost Manchester United and his reputation.”
Sancho was again absent for the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday. Ten Hag said on the 23-year-old afterwards: “I don’t talk about players who are not available.”
