Thomas Tuchel calls up unseen Chelsea youngster for FA Cup tie at Barnsley

Chelsea academy prospect Lewis Bate has been called up to the first-team squad and could make his senior debut in the FA Cup fifth-round tie at Barnsley.

Bate, 18, is a central or defensive midfielder who has spent the bulk of the season with the Blues' Under-23s, winning the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for December.

The England youth international has clearly caught Thomas Tuchel's eye since the German's appointment as manager in January and he has been training with the first team for the last week.

Bate will hope to make his first Chelsea appearance at Oakwell after progressing through the ranks from Under-9 level.

Bate's fellow Under-23s star Tino Anjorin has also been named in the squad and may make his fifth senior appearance.

The 19-year-old striker has been in fine form this season with three goals and two assists in six Premier League 2 games.

Elsewhere, Tuchel is expected to hand starting roles to midfielders Billy Gilmour and N'Golo Kante, and forward Hakim Ziyech.
