Tottenham ‘will demand £26m to allow Steven Bergwijn to leave’ after the winger – who is wanted by Ajax and Everton – revealed he wants to quit Antonio Conte’s side and insisted Champions League football would not be deal-breaker
- Steven Bergwijn could be on his way out of Tottenham for £26m this summer
- Ajax and Everton are among the clubs most interested in the Holland forward
- Dutch giants have reportedly had a £17m bid rejected by Spurs last week
- Bergwijn, 24, has already admitted he is desperate to ‘leave Spurs now’
- Champions League football is not thought to be a key part of any negotiations
Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn could be on the move for a fee of £26million this summer, with Ajax reportedly ‘working on’ a deal for the Dutch international over the last six months.
According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are open to the player leaving the club, but will want to recoup as much of the £27m that they paid PSV Eindhoven for him in 2020.
Ajax are thought to be keen admirers of the 24-year-old, and have reportedly been working on a deal since January but their most recent offer of £17m has been rejected in the week Bergwijn has made his intentions to leave Spurs clear.
Steven Bergwijn joined Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 for £27million
Speaking to AD, Bergwijn admitted: ‘I just need to go play. I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure.
‘Is it important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That’s not my top priority. It would be nice, but what’s important is that I’m going to play.’
‘I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. But for the last few months, I was hardly looked after there.
Antonio Conte has only selected Bergwijn to start once since his appointment in November
‘I want to go and play somewhere weekly. It would be nice if there was clarity soon. My situation now has to be different.’
The Spurs winger has drawn interest from both Everton and Ajax, with the Dutch champions having a £17m bid rejected last week.
With Champions League football unlikely to be a stumbling block in transfer negotiations, the likelihood that Bergwijn will leave north London this summer is much greater, and will likely be music to Everton’s ears.
Bergwijn was on the scoresheet in Holland’s 4-1 victory over Belgium in the Nations League
After the win against Belgium, Holland manager Louis van Gaal said that Spurs don’t give Bergwijn ‘enough playing minutes’ and that they should let the Dutch international join Ajax.
Van Gaal said: ‘I want him (Bergwijn) to go to Ajax as soon as possible. Tottenham don’t give him enough playing minutes and that is unbelievable when you see his qualities.
The Tottenham No 23 has shone on international duty for Van Gaal’s side recently – scoring twice against Denmark and netting in the draw with Germany before scoring the opener in their recent 4-1 thumping of rivals Belgium.
Despite this, Bergwijn only started four Premier League matches in 2021-22 – three of which came under previous boss Nuno Espirito Santo in August.
