Unai Emery's comments after leaving Arsenal still ring true under Mikel Arteta.

The former PSG and Sevilla manager was sacked by the club in November 2019 and replaced by then Manchester City coach Arteta, who won the FA Cup in his debut season as a manager.

Despite that positive step, the Gunners have been far from their best during the current Premier League season, winning four and losing four across their first eight fixtures.

With Emery now impressing with Villarreal, the comments he made about the attitude of some of his players in north London have been compared with Arteta’s words on Sunday evening.

“Arsenal was a club on a downward slope for two years before I arrived,” said Emery in February.

“We stopped this fall and even began to rebuild the club with the Europa League final and 5th place in the league, only one point off of Tottenham despite the fact that we took just one point in our final five matches.

“We had Champions’ League qualification in our grasp and it went wrong in the end. But it was a good season and we had this notion of continuing to improve.”

Before adding: “They were personalities that we missed this season to stay on the right track. And some stars did not have a good attitude and asked for more than what they were giving back.

“Taking all of that into account, we needed time to succeed with our transition to a new Arsenal which is what I wanted.”

Speaking to BBC Sport, Arteta said on Sunday evening: "When we created chances we didn't put them away. We didn't win enough duels and the distances between the lines was too big.

"Against Leicester the first half was positive. We can lose a game like that. The way we lost today hurts.

"It's not a coincidence we don't have that consistency. We have to address that. We have to analyse, get a mirror to each of us and look at ourselves. Instead of looking to blame others, look at yourself."

Emery won 43 of his 78 games as Arsenal boss between 2018 and 2019, a ratio of 55 per cent.

Arteta has won 24 of his 42 matches, posting a slightly better ratio of 57 per cent.

Arsenal will be keen to bounce back from that defeat by beating Leeds after the international break.
