Van de Beek swayed by Man Utd project after private talk with manager Solskjaer

Donny van de Beek made up his mind over joining Manchester United when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer outlined his long-term plans in a private chat.

The Dutch midfielder is on the brink of signing from Ajax in a £40million move after the Premier League giants made a breakthrough in negotiations over the weekend.

It seen as a coup for the Red Devils, with the 23-year-old ace expected to sign a five-year deal after previously being linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham.

And according to The Athletic, Solskjaer played a leading role in persuading Van de Beek to make the move to Old Trafford.

It is claimed that the midfielder was reluctant to commit 100 per cent to the Red Devils until he spoke personally, and privately, with the manager.

And it is understood that the midfielder was won over after being told how he would fit in alongside midfield superstars Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

Indeed, Van de Beek almost instantly decided that he wanted to join United once he came off the phone with Solskjaer.

The manager is confident that he can find a starring role for the Ajax man in his squad, with United in no doubt that they need strength in depth in their squad if they are to challenge for silverware this season.

While Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar and Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp both gave the Premier League glowing references, it is Solskjaer who is understood to have played the biggest part in this move.

Ultimately, United's chief negotiator Matt Judge moved in to seal an agreement with the Holland international after being alerted to Tottenham's attempt to hijack the move.

Van de Beek has agreed a five-year deal – with the option of an extra 12 months.

He has even told friends in Amsterdam that Solskjaer's determination to sign him was the key factor in his decision.

Van de Beek was impressed with the vision the United boss described to him about the direction the Reds are going after finishing third last season to seal a return to the Champions League.

He seemed bound for Real Madrid earlier this summer when the Spanish champions agreed a £44.6million fee with Ajax.

But the deal collapsed when the coronavirus crisis struck – and now United have swooped.

The midfielder has scored 41 goals in 175 appearances for Ajax and has been capped 10 times by Holland.
