Varane could take dream Man Utd shirt number after ruthless decision

Raphael Varane could take his dream shirt number at Manchester United – if the club make a ruthless call.

The Real Madrid man is set to call time on his career at the Santiago Bernabeu, with reports suggesting a medical is in place this week once Varane abides by UK Covid-19 quarantine rules.

Set to sign for just £34million plus add-ons, the 28-year-old has supporters salivating over the prospect of him lining up alongside Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Aaron-Wan Bissaka in the Red Devils' back line.

He's set to pen a four-year contract with the option of an extra with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's side after rejecting a renewal of his deal in Madrid and the Frenchman will soon be given the choice of a shirt number.

Having won the World Cup and four Champions League titles, Varane is a statement signing at Old Trafford, especially after United captured Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £73million last week.

An acquisition of his magnitude will no doubt see shirts sales soar.

With Real icon and recently-departed captain Sergio Ramos donning the no. 4 jersey for the Spanish giants, Varane has worn 19, 2 and 5 for Los Blancos.

However, he sports 4 for France and wore it during their 2018 World Cup triumph.

That number is currently taken by Phil Jones on the red side of Manchester.

Jones has been at the club for 10 years this summer but failed to appear in a single Premier League match last season.

However, reports have suggested that the club are willing to let the 29-year-old depart due to his constant injury issues that have plagued his once-promising career.

As a result, United have the chance to hand Varane the No.4 shirt he would seemingly want – if they decide to take Jones' squad number away from him.

However, Solskjaer's decision to stay loyal to fan favourite Edinson Cavani and leave Sancho to select number 25 could bode well for Jones.

The Mail claim that the delay in the 21-year-old's unveiling, which occurred last Friday, was down to the winger’s desire to get the no.7.

The Norweigan manager reportedly declined to ask Cavani to vacate the number for Sancho.

So what free numbers will Varane have to choose from?

None of his previously worn digits are available, with Maguire boating 5, Victor Lindelof 2 and Amad 19.

12 and 22 are free, while 16 has been vacant since Marcos Rojo's departure.

If Paul Pogba leaves for Paris Saint-Germain as mooted, the defender could take up his compatriot's 6.

14 and 15 may also be on the cards if Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira are shipped out by the Red Devils, respectively, as could Diogo Dalot's 20.

The important thing is for fans, though, Varane is on his way.

United's Premier League season begins at home to Leeds United on Saturday, August 14.
