A YouTube and TikTok star has made La Liga history after making his eagerly-awaited debut for hometown club Cadiz.
Pedro Benito was named as a substitute for the visit of Valencia on Saturday, before coming on to replace Alvaro Negredo with 30 minutes to play.
The 21-year-old centre forward is the son of former Cadiz player Alberto Benito, who was also the club’s sporting director when they were promoted to the Spanish top-flight in 2006.
Over the COVID-19 lockdowns, Benito steadily built a large following on YouTube, where he has a following oof more than 100,000, and on TikTok where he has one million followers.
He has continued to post since earning a professional contract with Cadiz, with the club’s flag seen in the background of many of his videos.
Having spent time as a youth player at Almeria, Swansea City and Cyprus side Anorthosis, Benito joined Cadiz this summer, originally with a view to continuing his development with the B team.
After impressing with his performances in the RFEF Segunda Division, Benito was called up to the senior squad when manager Alvaro Cervera punished seven stars who went to a nightclub after their defeat to Rayo Vallecano.
The striker was brought on with the game goalless at the hour mark, replacing former Manchester City star Negredo.

While he failed to register a goal on target during his time on the pitch, he did draw plaudits for his eagerness to get on the ball.
With the seven players dropped having served their punishment, Benito will likely return to the B team following next week’s international break.
And after the game, he delivered a message of thanks to the Cadiz fans for the support they showed him at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla.
“Debuting in First is the dream of any child, but doing it with the team of your life and replacing one of your childhood idols is something that I will never be able to explain,” he wrote on Twitter.
