James Cummings is banking on Savatiano’s compelling fresh form to overcome a cast of Group 1 stars in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Pitted against seven Group 1 winners, Cummings is optimistic the mare can continue the stable’s impressive run of black-type successes following recent Melbourne victories by Viridine and Home Of The Brave.
Solidly supported from $7 into $5 since markets opened, Savatiano is one of only four runners without a Group 1 win – stablemate Cascadian, Morrissy and Sirrconi are the others – in the race.

Cummings is undeterred.
“She’s shown how explosive she can be first-up and under the right track conditions she’ll get the chance to put that ability on show,” he said.
Sidelined since finishing sixth to Bella Vella in the Group 1 TAB Classic at Morphettville in May, Savatiano won a 850m trial at Randwick on July 31 before being scratched because of unsuitable conditions last Saturday.
“She missed her intended first-up run last week due to the heavy track, but she comes here in the same shape and with similar prospects,” Cummings said.
Cascadian ($15) returns to Melbourne for the first time since a narrow defeat to Fierce Impact in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington in November.
“We head to Melbourne with the same attitude we had last week in Sydney,” Cummings said.

“He has the capacity to be a weight-for-age performer, and he embarks on that path this Saturday.
“His spring campaign is underway. It’s a long tough haul and it’s time for this horse to exhibit the talent and flair he has always shown us.
“Both of them will improve on what they show here.”
Viridine chases successive Caulfield wins in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) after claiming victory over the same course in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on July 25.
Burdened with 62kg, Viridine sits at the top of the weights with veteran Jungle Edge, conceding weight to Group 1 winners Begood Toya Mother and Miami Bound.
“My initial plan was to keep him to set weight races, but on further assessment, the 62kg allotted on a 56kg minimum, is an impost within his reach,” Cummings said.

“Don’t forget, he carried 61kg when winning the Winter Dash at Randwick three starts back.
“Having said that, I’ll need to be satisfied by all the race conditions on Saturday morning for him to be a certain starter.”
Viridine is a solid TAB $3.20 favourite ahead of Age Of Chivalry ($4.80) and Bumper Blast ($5).
