Champion trainer Chris Waller has made a crucial gear change for 1000 Guineas favourite Hungry Heart

Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller has gone for the blinkers on Thousand Guineas favourite Hungry Heart.

Hungry Heart is the $3.20 favourite in TAB’s Thousand Guineas market in which the unbeaten Instant Celebrity is the only other runner under $10 at $3.70.

Hungry Heart ran second in three of the four legs of the Princess Series of three-year-old fillies’ races in Sydney. She was narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last Saturday.

Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth said adding the blinkers could be the ingredient Hungry Heart needs to become a Group 1 winner.

“We have added blinkers to her for this weekend as that may just help sharpen her up a fraction,” Duckworth said.

“Her run in the Flight stakes was outstanding and a Group 1 placing on her pedigree page certainly adds plenty of value.”

A daughter of former UK champion Frankel, Hungry Heart made her racing debut at Flemington in January.

Duckworth said that experience meant Hungry Heart would have no issue reverting to the Melbourne way of going at Caulfield, nor would the forecast rain pose a problem for the filly.

“She is fit and ready and already had a preparation in Melbourne so going left or right-handed shouldn’t be a worry to her,” Duckworth said.

“She has been looking for the sting out of the ground so I don’t think the rain should be an issue.

“Obviously if the track does get into the heavy range then it will be unknown.”

Hugh Bowman will ride Hungry Heart in the Thousand Guineas. Hungry Heart will jump from barrier three.

Runners backing up within seven days have won two of the six editions of the Thousand Guineas since the race was brought forward to the first Saturday of the Caulfield Cup carnival in 2014.

Global Glamour won both the Flight Stakes and Thousand Guineas in 2016 while Amphitrite won the 2018 Thousand Guineas seven days after claiming the Edward Manifold Stakes.
