Jonny Bairstow was accused of looking ‘uninterested’ after his first-ball dismissal on Saturday took his sorry sequence of ducks against India in Test cricket to six in nine innings.
India batting great Sunil Gavaskar laid into England’s number three after he turned a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery straight into the hands of Rohit Sharma, saying: ‘You have not scored a run, and just come in and push at it, as if there was no fielder at backward short leg.
‘It looked to me as if it was the shot of a person disinterested. What’s he trying to do? First ball, he should be looking to play a soft defensive shot. There is a fielder there at backward short leg. Uninterested. ‘Never mind if I get a duck, I will go back to England, start scoring runs and I will be back in the frame.’ ‘

Bairstow ended a 13-month absence from Test cricket in Sri Lanka at the start of the year but relinquished his place at first wicket down following that 2-0 win when he returned to the UK for his scheduled rest period.
It meant he returned to the XI cold and lacking the rhythm that saw him average 46.33 against the Sri Lankans.
Bairstow made three noughts, and such were his struggles that Gavaskar suggested England should have moved away from the ‘straight and narrow’ and promoted Ben Foakes five places from number eight for the final innings of a chastening series.
