Probabeel on track for All-Star Mile after first-up win at Caulfield

Phase one of Probabeel’s All-Star Mile plan is complete after the top Kiwi mare’s impressive win in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Probabeel’s trainer Jamie Richards sent her to Melbourne with the aim of running in the $5 million All-Star Mile at The Valley on March 13 after 1200m and 1400m lead-up runs.

The dual Group 1 winner had little trouble disposing of her opposition in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes to tick off the first of her three assignments.

"She's going to be too classy."

Oh, Probabeel. 😍

Backed into $2.70, Probabeel raced wide but the favourite easily held off the Warrnambool-trained Paul’s Regret ($19) and the $2.80 second pick Snapdancer.

Jockey Damien Lane said his decision to improve Probabeel’s position midrace was the key to her latest success.

“Halfway down the side I thought I’m going more harm than good trying to go back so I just let her stride and she had too much on them,” Lane said.

Probabeel sits eighth in the All-Star Mile standings with a week to go before public voting closes. But her next start will be in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 20, which offers a guaranteed All-Star Mile start to the winner.

Godolphin could also start thinking of the All-Star Mile with Best Of Days after he returned to winning form in the Group 3 TS Carlyon Cup (1600m).

Best Of Days hadn’t won a race since the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington but benefited from a Damien Oliver special, leading throughout to score by 1 ¾ lengths.

The James Cummings-trained Best Of Days was narrowly beaten in two Sydney runs in December but enjoyed an unchallenged lead in the TS Carlyon Cup.

Cummings’ Melbourne representative Sean Keogh said the Australian Cup was one option for the import.

“Or you could run in the Blamey (and win) and that would make you exempt for the All-Star Mile,” Keogh said.
