Robert Hickmott pair ruled out of Caulfield and Melbourne Cups through injury

Import Schabau’s Melbourne Cup quest will have to wait another year after he was ruled out of the spring through injury.

Schabau led throughout to post a narrow win at Flemington on August 7, after which trainer Robert Hickmott confirmed he would aim the seven-year-old at the Melbourne Cup qualifying races.

However, Hickmott informed Racing Victoria stewards the gelding would miss the rest of the spring.

Hickmott also advised Django Freeman was also injured.

Django Freeman finished seventh at Flemington at his only run this time in.

While Hickmott has lost two imports for the spring, he is overseeing Lloyd Williams’ locally trained team at Macedon Lodge.

Hickmott is working with seven Williams-owned Melbourne Cup entries, including Queen Elizabeth Stakes runner-up Pondus and Irish Group 3 winner Dawn Patrol.
