State Of Rest edges out Anamoe in thrilling Cox Plate, but protest lodged

State Of Rest has crossed the line first in the 2021 Cox Plate on a day of drama after favourite Zaaki was forced out on race morning due to an elevated temperature.

Piloted by John Allen and trained by Joseph O’Brien, State Of Rest finished about a nose ahead of Anamoe, with Craig Williams in the saddle.

It was a neck-and-neck battle between the two down the short straight at Moonee Valley.

But correct weight has not been given and a protest has been lodged by Anamoe’s connections against State Of Rest for interference in the final stages.

Most pundits are expecting the protest to be upheld, but views are split.

On the Channel Seven coverage, Bruce McAvaney also believed the protest would be upheld: “I don’t think there’s much in it,” he said.

Zaaki’s trainer Annabel Neasham broke the news on Twitter just after 7.30am, leaving the Cox Plate field in disarray.
