Sydney trainer chasing Victorian riches in Clockwise Classic

Randwick trainer John Sargent has looked for the perfect horse for the unique Magic Millions Clockwise Classic for a couple of years.

But he thinks he has the right type for the $250,000 race in the form of first starter Readily Availabull.

The Magic Millions Clockwise Classic is the only Victorian flat race run the Sydney way of going. But Sydney stables haven’t won the race since Gai Waterhouse claimed the event with Carriages in 2014.

Sargent said Readily Availabull needed further development but the son of Bull Point was ready to travel south the tackle the Ballarat Cup Day feature.

“You have start somewhere and he’s ready to go,” Sargent said.

“He still needs to get a bit stronger but he’s ready to race and worked well this morning.”

Readily Availabull has had the advantage of two official trials in Sydney, winning the latest of those two hit-outs at Rosehill on November 12.

Sargent said that trial convinced him he had the right horse to test in Victoria.

“If you can get a two-year-old with a natural ability to jump and run around that way, it’s a big bonus,” Sargent said.

“The way he trialled, I thought it would be a get chance to get him there.”

Like all runners in the Clockwise Classic, the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast in January next year is the aim for Readily Availabull.

But Sargent went to the other end of the country to buy Bull Point. The trainer paid $25,000 for him at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale in Launceston.

Sargent said the return float to Melbourne would season Readily Availabull while a good performance in the Ballarat race would go a long way towards booking the youngster’s place in the Gold Coast event.

“He’s shown ability and the trip will make him anyway,” Sargent said.

“It’s a good race because if you run in the first two or three, you’ve got a good stake to get a start.

“That’s another reason for the choice to go down there.”
