TAB On The Punt: Nathan Exelby previews the meeting at Doomben

Sky Racing and Brisbane Racing Club’s turf expert Nathan Exelby runs his eye over Saturday’s Doomben meeting.

Humbolt Current, R2, No.4 – $2

Unbeaten in two Doomben runs and tumbles down to the 54kg limit here. He was just outmuscled by Romakash at Eagle Farm last time but weighted/drawn to turn the tables.

Tara Jasmine, R4, No.5 – $5

She was just found wanting at the end of 1400m under 58.5kg last time. Back to 1350m looks a positive, but more so the huge drop in weight, as she will carry just 52kg after Leah Kilner’s claim. Previous run at Coffs Harbour was good against older horses.

Toorooloo, R8, No.7 – $5

David Vandyke sent her back to the trials to get her confidence back and after winning there, she showed a neat turn of foot to win at Caloundra. She’s back to 1050m here, but is four weeks between runs and drawn to sit just behind them. She can win again.

Race 6: Colts, Geldings and Entires Class 3 Plate (1110m)

Weona Smartone ($2) is the short-priced favourite. He does look promising but he comes up against a couple of handy ones from the Tony Gollan stable. Leadership Spill ($4.40) will have the advantage of the inside and get his chance, but will have Weona Smartone and potentially a couple of others for company at the pointy end. The Move ($5.50) will sit off them and hope to get in somewhere under Jim Byrne. The improving track looks a big plus for him and if he has any luck, he’s capable of running over them. Yes, he’s been costly and failed to live up to the hype so far, but the ability is there and worth remembering he trialled like a bomb before the first up defeat on wet ground.

Selections: 12 The Move, 6 Leadership Spill, 14 Weona Smartone

Race 7: Fillies and Mares Class 3 Plate (1110m)

Very tricky looking race. Snitzari ($3.80) comes up favourite after ploughing through the mud at Doomben 10 days ago. This will be a vastly different surface and she’s now taking on better opposition. But she’s drawn to get every chance, while a couple of key rivals need some luck. These include Oh Five Glory ($6.50), who is best placed under this weight scale, particularly after the claim. The shorter course suits as well. If she can get across from the draw, she’s dangerous here. Explosive Quality ($9.50) is the interesting runner first up. She’s turned in two good trials, so she should be ready for the 1110m and like the way she came through her grades last time in.

Selections: 6 Snitzari, 4 Oh Five Glory, 11 Explosive Quality

Race 8: Three-Year-Old Handicap (1050m)

Toorooloo ($4.40) was back to her best last time at the Sunshine Coast, showing a turn of foot to put her rivals away pretty quickly. She got a little tired at the end, but the race had already been won. Comes back to 1050m now, but draws the inside, which can allow her to enjoy a nice soft run behind the speed. She just needs a gap to open and she’s going to be hard to hold out. Snappy Reply ($4) hasn’t trialled officially, but has had a jumpout. She showed plenty of talent last year when just collared a couple of times late. Suspect she will give a good sight in front. Zingalong ($5) and Be Water My Friend ($12) both come off handy efforts in stronger races but the draw hasn’t been kind to them and prefer the fillies.

Selections: 7 Toorooloo, 9 Snappy Reply

Race 9: Class 6 Handicap (1200m)

Lashes was scratched out of a stakes race at Rosehill to take on this Class 6, which is a very winnable target. Matt Smith has a handy record when he comes to Brisbane and he’s placed this mare beautifully here. Though she hasn’t won for a long time, Lashes formlines read very well, none more so than being beaten 2.2 lengths by Probabeel two starts back. She box seats from the good draw and should be very hard to beat. So Taken was heavily backed to win at the Gold Coast and ploughed through the mud to land the money. She’s a chance again, along with Royal Hale, who impressed first up, and Let’s Party Marty coming back to 1200m on a drying track.

Selections: 6 Lashes, 8 So Taken, 2 Royal Hale, 4 Let’s Party Marty

Isotope (Rosehill, Race 1, $2.90) has had to wait an extra week to showcase her ability to the southerners and with a drying track it takes away a little uncertainty. She’s opposed to a stronger field than what would have been there last week, but she’s good enough to take care of them.

In the Rosehill Guineas, Lion’s Roar (Rosehill, Race 5, $7.50) is out to big odds now. He’s proven at the trip and is a better horse than when Montefilia beat him in the spring.
