Tommy Berry believes classy four-year-old Funstar is set to bounce back from her most disappointing performance when she tackles the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday.
The Chris Waller-trained mare had built a reputation for her consistency prior to her worst career performance when a well beaten favourite in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle.
Berry says Funstar is set to kick off 2021 in similar shape, but he says the daughter of Adelaide should be forgiven for the failure due to her consistency in her other 12 race starts.

“Going into the Golden Eagle I’d never been more confident going into a big race in my life,” he said.
“Her work leading up to the race was super but for some reason she was well below her best that day.
“She’s given me a similar feel coming into Saturday, but she’s never run poorly fresh so I’m hoping that continues on Saturday.”
The last time Funstar resumed over 1400m returned a close second in the Group 1 Surround Stakes just shy of 12 months ago behind her rival Probabeel.
“I think 1400 (metres) first-up suits her well,” Berry said.
“Her two trials have been nice, and I galloped her last Saturday and that really cleaned her out for this weekend.
“I said to Chris (Waller) after the gallop I felt she was spot on and I really couldn’t be happier with her.
“I’m expecting her to run well Saturday.”

Funstar is the $5 equal second favourite along with Kolding behind their stablemate Verry Elleegant.
Meanwhile, Berry says Masked Crusader has the ability, but he will need to bring his A-game if he is to justify his short quote in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.
The Hawkes Racing-trained galloper is the $2.50 favourite for the open sprint after failing to win in three runs in easier grade during his previous campaign.
“He’s going great but it’s a tough race and he’s got to step up and show us what he’s capable of,” Berry said.
“We think he’s got the ability to match it with these horses, but he’s got to do everything right.”
