The outsider of the whole field, Takingrisks, won Doncaster's Sky Bet Chase at odds of 40-1.
Nicky Richards' veteran stayed on with great courage up the run-in to collar Aye Right (8-1), with 4-1 favourite Cap Du Nord back in third.
Aye Right bravely set out to make most of the running and kept up the gallop, but he could not hold off his final challenger.
Takingrisks, the winner of the 2019 Scottish National, was ridden to victory by Sean Quinlan for owner Frank Bird.
"All he's done is stay and he's winged the last then galloped all the way to the line," Quinlan said.
"Aye Right was second in a Hennessy and I thought was the horse to beat, but Nicky's done a fantastic job with this horse.
"The plan was the Scottish National and to take in a race or two on the way."
Richards was on hand to greet his winner, having recovered from a fall on the gallops during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Greystoke trainer spent two days in the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle back in March, after breaking his right shoulder and several ribs.
"He's a high class handicapping horse and he's got what all racehorses need, a heart of a lion," he said.
Graham was full of praise for Aye Right, beaten a length-and-a-quarter at the finish after jockey Callum Bewley dropped his whip.
"Didn't he jump superbly?" she told ITV Racing.
"He was probably taking half a length out of the field at most of the fences once he warmed up."
Bewley told a post-race enquiry that he used the palm of his hand to encourage Aye Right to go forward, before immediately realising his mistake
The stewards reminded him of his responsibilities as a jockey under Rule (D)2.
